The Silver Boom -- The early years of gold production lead to a fortuitous discovery of silver in California Gulch in the mid 1870s. Claims are staked in 1876, followed by more discoveries in 1877, 1878, and then in 1879. Fortunes are made almost overnight. While silver prices slowly fall over the years leading to the Silver Crash of 1893, Leadville's production continues to grow.
